Gabrielle Bonhour Chanel is the founder of the brand, Chanel, which the models are desirous of taking its podium and that it’s a privilege to possess the designs of it. Alias Coco Chanel… The proof of that it’s not necessary to be born successful in order to be successful and it’s enough to want and evaluate the opportunities.

The heritage she created from nothing

Chanel opened her eyes to the world in France in 1883. Her pedlar father gave Gabrielle to orphanage after her mother’s death. The nuns who raised her there also taught her sewing. This was the starting point which would make Chanel to be recognized worldwide.

She started to earn her living by singing at cabarets. “Qui qu’a vu Coco” had been a turning point for her. She would be  commemorated as Coco Chanel from then on.


She wanted to commercialize her sewing love inside. When rich textiler Etienne Balsan who was the friend of Chanel when she was 20 years old said that he could help her to open her first business, she opened her first store. Her partnership and love life with Balsan, lasted until she started to be in a relationship with Arthut “Boy” Capel who is a richer friend of her. She opened her first clothing store thanks to Capel in 1910.

In fact, the reason for thriving of Chanel was an old jacket. A lot of women who saw this old jacket that Chanel wore in a cold day asked her where they could buy that jacket. Then she said that she could make for them. This happening was her first success in clothing industry. According to her, Chanel owed her wealth to that old jacket.

One of the firsts that Chanel put her signature under is the “first design perfume”. Chanel No 5… The advertisements of the perfume, which was used by many celebrities from Marilyn Monroe to Nicole Kidman, were very assertive: It is the unseen, unforgettable, ultimate accessory of fashion that heralds your arrival and prolongs your departure…

Coco Chanel, who used the power of the men as a tool impressively, had a romantic relationship with Duke of Westminster. After the 10-year long relationship, Chanel refused the wedding proposal of the Duke saying “There have been several Duchesses of Westminster. There is only one Chanel.” You can still see the first letters of Coco Chanel on the street lamps of Westminster which have been made by the Duke.

It had become hard to live in France which was occupied by German forces with the beginning of the Second World War. She could continue to live in her apartment in Ritz Hotel with a special permission thanks to her relationship with a German soldier, Hans Gunther von Dincklage. Although she was investigated after the end of the war, she went scot free. Many people says that Chanel’s friend Winston Churcill was of service to her on this subject. On the other hand, her relationship with a Nazi soldier during the occupation drew reaction of the people.

A milestone for the female

In the period Chanel lived, women used to wear corsets in which they barely breathed. According to Chanel, the dressing style of the modern women shouldn’t be this. According to her, “Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury.” From then on, the women were able to breathe freely again. She revolutionized women’s clothing. In 1926, when she designed the legendary black dress which is present in every woman’s wardrobe for 87 years, she has demonstrated how a color used at funeral ceremonies could be classy to wear in the evenings. When she was designing her feminine designs such as the famous collarless jacket, hobble skirts and striped sailor blouses, she was inspired of men’s clothing.

Musical was staged, books were written and movies were shot for Coco Chanel who was found dead in Ritz Hotel in 1971. In 2008-made film named Coco Chanel, Audrey Tautou portrayed Chanel. After her death, designer Karl Lagerfeld became the head of the company in order to maintain her heritage. Today, the brand Chanel earns more than 3 billion dollars a year.

Soon afterwards she started modeling, Schiffer attracted the attention of Karl Lagerfeld. Chanel’s new face had been found. Lagerfeld says “Beneath her angelic looks, there is an all work, very serious, essentially a smooth-running German business machine” about Schiffer.

The lion of ‘80s and ‘90s

In the end of the ‘80s and through the ‘90s, a Claudia Schiffer mania was dominant throughout the world. The women used to try to dress like her, the companies wanted her to play in their commercials. Schiffer, who was then recognized by all the world, was earning 50.000 dollars a day when she got the Top-Earning Model title. Schiffer, who added a new thing to her business field, acquired currency with her fitness videos again. The videos she dubbed with her bad English accent were demanded so much.

Although she had a bash at acting and presenting, the industry she had been hearing positive comments from everyone was modeling. So much so that when many models are forced to retire when they turn the ages around 40, Schiffer was selected as The Model of The Year by Elle magazine in 2010. She was not ready for retirement yet.

Rice, who started reading before starting to elementary school, finished the senior class and the first class of university in the same year. When she passed to second class of Political Sciences department of University of Denver, she was 16 years old. One year later, she completed her master’s degree in University of Notre Dame and lastly, she completed here doctorate on International Relations in 1981 in University of Denver again. She became Politics Science professor in Stanford University in the year she completed her doctorate and fulfilled this duty with success for over 30 years.

Warrior Princess

In December of 2000, she became the National Security Advisor with the assignment of the President George W. Bush. Because of her self possession and kindness, she used to be commemorated “Warrior Princess”. From then on, she was a big power having a say in Middle East. Unfortunately, more stressful days were waiting for Rice after that. People hold low security measures of Rice responsible for the terrorist attacks to World Trade Center carried out by Al Qaeda on 11 September 2001. The effect of Rice had grown.

Condoleezza Rice was supporting America to invade Iraq for stocking weapons of mass destruction. “The problem here is that there will always be some uncertainty about how quickly he can acquire nuclear weapons. In the same period, it was unfolded that Rice had allowed FBI to apply torture methods during Iraq invasion. Although she was criticized by the democrats, Condoleezza Rice was greatly supported by Republicans. After the end of her duty as the Secretary of State, she got back on her task at Stanford University.

“I think my father thought I might be president of the United States. I think he would’ve been satisfied with secretary of state. I’m a foreign policy person and to have a chance to serve my country as the nation’s chief diplomat at a time of peril and consequence, that was enough. My future is with my students at Stanford and in public service on issues that I care about education reform.”

Rice, who supported Romney in the rivalry between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney in 2008, is also a sports fan who wrote four books. She succeeded to be the first woman member of Augusta National Golf Club which is famous with not admitting women.

Rice’s musician mother gave her name inspiring of Italian musical term, “con dolcezza”. Con dolcezza means “with sweetness”.

Successive tragedies

When she lost her mother from cancer five years after her birth in Yorkshire, England in 1816, her aunt raised Charlotte and her other siblings. Their father sent the Bronte sisters to a private school for the priest children whose financial situation were bad. The possibilities of the school were so unfavourable that Charlotte lost two of her siblings from tuberculosis. Thereon, their father removed the other children from the school. The literary fiction that Bronte sisters created playing in the house was preparing them for their literal skills in the adulthood. When the school was finished, Charlotte and her sister went to a boarding school in Brussels. As Charlotte, who teached and governessed in her whole life, did teach English there and Emily was music teacher. They had to return to home after the death of their aunt but Charlotte went back to Brussels after a short while. However, it didn’t last for long for her to return home without being able to stand to loneliness or maybe the love she felt for the school principal Constantin Heger. And there, the next period was the period that the foundations which will make a great contribution to the English literature were laid.

Only 2 pieces sold

Not to create prejudice because they are women, three sisters, Charlotte, Emily and Anne Bronte, published a joint poem book with the nicknames, Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell, which are more masculin. Unfortunately, the book sold only two copies. Bronte sisters, who didn’t give up upon that, continued to write personally.

The reason for this was the piece presented diametrically opposite opinions to Victorian Era and the people suspected that the author of Jane Eyre was a woman.

Charlette Bronte’s feminism

Bronte stood against the cliches of Victorian Era with her own feminist opinions. Her first-person singular verbalism and especially it was written by a female were not only limited with marking a new era but also breaking the reader’s criticising poweri it was forcing the reader to emphatize with.

“Women are supposed to be very calm generally: but women feel just as men feel; they need exercise for their faculties and a field for their efforts as much as their brothers do; they suffer from too rigid a restraint, too absolute a stagnation, precisely as men would suffer; and it is narrow-minded in their more privileged fellow-creatures to say that they ought to confine themselves to making puddings and knitting stockings, to playing on the piano and embroidering bags.”

Jane Eyre broke the moulds of Victorian Era for females with strong moral and freedom understanding. As Charlotte stepped in the literature world with Jane Eyre, Emily with Wuthering Heights, Anne with Agnes Grey appeared before the reader.

Deaths don’t end!

While Shirley was working on her second novel in 1848, Charlotte lost two people of her family in eight months. She firstly lost her brother from bronchitis and consecutively Emily and Anne from tuberculosis… Charlotte’s way of coping with pain would pass through writing.

When Charlotte Bronte was married to the assistant of her father, she was 37 years old. After a year, she departed this life with her unborn baby. Bronte has four books on the brink of Jane Eyre, whose one edition was printed after her death, Shirley, Villette and The Professor.

The poem Charlotte Bronte wrote when she was 13 years old named “I’ve been wandering in the Greenwoods” was sold for a price over 140.000 dollars in an auction in London on 10 April 2013.
