TRIMARANS: At full speed, in both shallow waters and open sea

Trimarans, which were designed by addition of another hull to catamarans, are the favorite ones of boat enthusiasts recently. There are some reasons for choosing Trimarans. Primarily, they can enter to shallow waters because they have no deep centerboards and they are light and much more speedy because they don’t carry ballast.

Trimarans can reach to the speeds which the single-hull boats can never reach. Another important advantage is that the shake is much lesser during the cruise… Having a larger and more comfortable internal volume than the other boats enables them to be preferred especially by the families.

Angry waves and sailors fighting with wind, divers pushing the deep, shovelers going beyond the oceans by arm power, swimmers swimming through seas, straits… The togetherness of human and sea comprises of a little competition, a little courage and of course passion. This competition, the feeling of winning is bringing many innovations along. Seas do the honours for the innovations and the inventions every passing day.

It’s possible to see a technological product, an innovation developed for the other fields of life, in the sea in a short while. Moreover, things proceeded further, there are even ones who work only for the sailors. Naturally, seas are now full of technologic, futuristic and environment-friendly boats. In view of comfort, no bounds are known in creativity and innovativeness.

You see, trimans are ‘interesting’ boats which emerged with this approach.

We can say that it’s an upgraded version of double-bodied boats, with its common name catamarans, created with being inspired by the rowboats of Polynesian inhabitants. The popularity of trimarans, which are built with addition of two small bodies near the main hull, is increasing every passing day.

Aren’t there any disadvantages? Of course there are. For example, they can’t be straightened when they overturn. Therefore, the sail size of the journey-purpose trimarans is smaller.

When sea, technology and luxury come together, trimarans get its share as well. Although they are not as much as the mega superyachts, some trimarans launched in recent years have entered among the most talked stuff of the sailors world.


Designers define UltraLuxum CXL as one of the most assertive futuristic designs. In addition to being the biggest multihull sailboat in the world, it has foldable side hulls. The mastermind of Ultraluxum CXL introduced at Monaco Yacht Show in September 2012, is the master designer of Cabestan watches, Jean-François Ruchonnet.
Super trimaran which was actualized by the collaboration of François Ruchonnet and worldwide known yacht architect Jean-Jacques Coste, has the width of 23 meters in full sail mode. In port entrances, side hulls are added to main hull by folding and the width decreases to 11 meters. Main sail area of trimaran is 360 squaremeters. In light wind conditions, 380-squaremeter asymmetric balloon topsail can be added to sail equipment. The length of the pole is 55 meters.
Life spaces of UltraLuxum CXL are also very interesting. In addition to a master cabin and two guest cabins, there are special rooms for the crew. Outside of trimaran, large sunbathing cushions available at both flybridge and well deck. UltraLuxum CXL has been built with epoxy resin infusion/carbon fiber and polyurethane foam technology. So, despite its huge sizes, it has a surprising weight of 90 tons. Cutting edge technology solar panels, new generation lithium-ion batteries and optional hybrid driven electric engine, it’s one of the yachts which have the lowest carbon emission in the industry. Its speed is 15 knots.
In the garage of this enormous yacht, there is a McLaren MP4-12C. With an agreement made between the company produced the yacht and McLaren, the vehicle will be retained to be seen from the cabin of its owner through a glass wall and come within the standard package.

Adastra which is awaited impatiently by marine industry and introduced as the ‘super yacht of the future’…
Adastra, which was designed upon an order for a Hong Kongese couple and built in McConaghy Dock in China, is one of the famous trimarans made debut last year. Adastra, which was interpreted as the ‘future of the long distance cruises’ by Boat International, can cover 4 thousand sea miles without refueling.
“Superyacht of the future” which costed 15 million dollars and whose architectural drawing and production phase lasted five years is 42.5 meters long and 16 meters wide. Adastra, in which the luxury and aesthetics combined with a great harmony, has been designed for long distance ocean journeys. Because the owners of the boat, Anto and Elaine Marden, are a pretty experienced couple in ocean cruises. During the design process, the recommendations of the couple has been determining.
The ship architecture of Adastra which was produced in the dock of Austrian McConaghy Boats in China, is of England-centred John Shuttleworth Yacht Designs and its interior design was carried out by Hong Kong origin Jepsen Designs.
Adastra, is pretty light thanks to its hull produced by the Glass/Kevlar foam sandwich technology and carbon fiber upper structure, because its unloaded weight is 49 tons. Adastra, which can reach up to the speed of 22 knots, benefits maximum from daylight thanks to the panoramic glasses on its main deck. There are sitting and food parts in the saloon. On its well deck, there are resting, bar areas and a food department. No need to say the garage. Nine people can spend the night in the boat and separate life spaces for six-person crew were designed.

When it comes to the sea and the luxury, automobile companies say “This is our job”. Among the automotive companies which put their signatures under different sea vehicles, there is Audi, too. Audi Trimaran is yet in the process of design. The most important characteristic of this project prepared in design studio in München is its possession of hybrid system, namely, it runs with both engine and electric. At both sides of the boat, small protrusions for two separate jetskis are standing out. One of the features of the boat distinguishing it from its rivals is an Audi TDI diesel engine is used. It steps in when electric-run jetskis need low speeds. Thus, both energy saving is provided and noise is prevented. In normal cruises, diesel engine reaching up to the speed of 30 knots is used. The length of the boat is 15 meters, its hull is 6.40 cm. Its deck is pretty large and host 12 people easily. 4 people can spend the night in the boat but there are two spare beds.


Dragonfly 35 has registered its quality by getting the award of “The Best Yacht of Europe” in 2008. There are two different models of Dragonfly. Touring edition has been designed for the ones who want speedy and easy cruise. And Ultimate appeals to the ones who want long journeys or racings.

Interior design of Dragonfly in which 6 people can accomodate is attention-grabbing. Even the smallest part in the boat has been evaluated with a different design perspective. For example, dress wardrobes are placed in cabins in the shape of V.

There is a large dinner table for eight people to eat in comfort in the main hall. The kitchen is equally good with luxury restaurants, it consists of functional and extremely technological materials. Deck and hall transitions are designed intelligently, too. At the part on the poop, a small working office has been created. For water sports enthusiasts, a special part for stocking surfing and diving equipment was not forgotten.

In addition to private use, trimarans has begun to be frequently used for charter tours. The trimaran named Cuan Law is one of those. In fact, the construction story of this boat is interesting. Cuan Law, which is one of the first modern trimarans, was built in Ontario, Canada. The boat of which construction was started in 1987 did its first cruises in Lake Ontario. Its next journey was to British Virgin Islands. The length of Cuan Law, which was built by Duncan Muirhead, is 105 meters. In this trimaran which hosts the ones who want a comfortable and pleasant vacation, it’s very hard to find places especially in summer months. In the boat whose interior design was made with cruise logic, there is everything needed in a vacation available. Large sunbathing part, rich kitchen and route it pledges are attractive for everyone.
