122 Years Story Of Cinema

The cinema, which has entered our lives with the moving images played on a white screen, and which has succeeded in fascinating all of us with its power, is a really great importance on behalf of art.

In fact, today’s journey of cinema, which brought together all branches of art, began in 1895 with the moving photo frames that they reflected from the tool called cinemascope which was invented by the French Lumiere brothers.

The name of movie was “The Coming of the Train to Ciotat”. It was a big step for humanity.

After the period of cinema in Europe, there was a worldwide surge, and cinema had fairly an addictive effect on people. Meeting with cinema on the Anatolian lands of the Ottoman Empire at that time was equivalent to 1896.

A Frenchman named Cinematograph Operator, Promio, travelled all over the land of Anatolia and recorded many works such as the Turkish Infantry’s Parade, the Turkish Artillery and the Panorama of the Bosphorus Coast.

The first movie projection in Istanbul was held at a pub named “Spoopneck” in Galatasaray. The film was “Ciotat Train to the Train”. The film was projected as ‘Railways’ in the Ottoman period.

In the meantime, it is said that Sultan Abdulhamit II loved the cinema very much. In general, his choice was movies which were mentioned the life of the palace and military life as in the news and which there were statesmen. Hence, it is stated that Abdülhamit followed developments in the world.

Ali Özuyar, author of a book entitled “Quiet Period Turkish Cinema History 1895 – 1922”, published by Yapı Kredi Publications, says that cinema was influenced by political periods in his book. Especially, during the II Constitutional Period, it is stated that there were serious protests like “We would like to write in Turkish” against French articles published among the films. In addition, it is told that German, Austrian, Hungarian and Bulgarian films, which were not seen objectionable once upon a time, were banned during the occupation and armistice.

Activities of the first movie making in the Ottoman Empire are carried out by the Yanaki – Milton Manaki brothers.
